Gerald Douglass Smith Obituary

February 21, 1972–July 14, 2021

Gerald Douglass Smith was born February 21, 1972 to the late James Edward Smith and Clara Nece Smith in Wichita Falls, Texas. He accepted Christ, was baptized, and confirmed at the age of six at Mount Calvary United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas.

While attending Barwise Junior High School in Wichita Falls, Texas, Gerald received the American Legion School Award in recognition of high courage, honor, leadership and patriotism. Gerald attended S.H. Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he was involved in: Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society, Student Council, Varsity Football, Track, and Weightlifting. He was in the National Honor Society and a Scholastic Award winner, as well as on the honor roll throughout his high school years. Not only was Gerald an honors student, he was ranked in the top ten (9/412) of his graduating class. He loved football and started playing at a young age for Pee Wee football teams all of the way through high school, where he played linebacker. Gerald enjoyed fitness and weightlifting and was a member of the “300 Club,” which was for individuals who could bench press 300 lbs! At least until the late 90s, he and his friends held the high school’s record for the 4X100 relay, with Gerald as the first leg.

Gerald received the Texas Academic Honor Award Scholarship to attend The University of Texas at Austin. While a student there, Gerald often tutored high school students in mathematics and other subjects. He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1998.

Gerald had a long career in the financial industry including Personal Banker for Bank of America Investment Services, Investment Consultant and VP Financial Consultant for Charles Schwab & Company, Financial Advisor for Merrill Lynch and Financial Professional for Capital Strategies Mass Mutual.

Gerald joined Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church in Austin, TX and was a longstanding member there. He was part of the Circles of Greatness small groups, and served in Church Under the Bridge Ministry, Economic Empowerment Ministry, as well as the Men’s Ministry, where he participated in visits to nursing home residents. Gerald was known for his kind and giving spirit. He had a heart for people who experience homelessness and would often give them food or money. He has also been known to help virtual strangers and blessing them financially.
